Harrogate and Ripon Beekeepers’ Association has its own Asian Hornet Action Team (AHAT) which is run by the AHAT Coordinator, Anton Bennett. He can be contacted by email: asianhornetteam@hrbka.org.uk
The Asian Hornet is an invasive, non-native and highly effective predator of insects, including honey bees and other beneficial species: It poses a serious threat to UK pollinators if it becomes established here, and would cause significant losses to bee colonies, and other native species.
If you suspect you’ve seen an Asian Hornet – If it is safe to do so, take a photo of the hornet, note the location of the incident and report it immediately via the Asian Hornet App (for iPhone or Android) or to the National Bee Unit (NBU) (Beebase – Beekeeping information resource for Beekeepers nationalbeeunit.com) with the photo attached.
If you find a nest, make a note of the location and advise the NBU and the Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS), maintaining a suitably safe distance and awaiting the arrival of Bee Inspectors.
Many mobile phones have GPS; you could also use the what3words app to give the location of the nest.
To identify a location use a map or postcode reference and note any direction of flight of hornet/s (Use a reference point such as a tree or buildings if you do not have a compass.) This information is courtesy of the BBKA
