The Beekeeping Weekend is a far more detailed version of the Beekeeping Taster Day. There will be both theoretical and practical teaching. HRBKA will endeavour to give people the experience of seeing inside a working hive, however it must be remembered that beehives can only be opened in good weather and practical work cannot be guaranteed.
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to bees and beekeeping by means of talks, demonstrations and as much practical beekeeping as time and weather allow. It will include bee biology, equipment, swarming, apiary sites, forage, diseases and honey extraction and other hive products. You should then feel confident enough to start looking after a hive on your own with the help of your local Beekeeping Association.
The course will be held in the Learning Centre at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr and at nearby apiaries belonging to the Association.
Each day will commence at 10.00am on both Saturday and Sunday and run through until about 5.00pm. Coffee and tea refreshments and lunch will be provided on both days.
Protective clothing can be provided on loan, however you will need to bring and wear your own wellington boots.
The course fee covers the cost of tuition, clothing hire, and lunch on both days.
