I have used porter escapes sucessfully in the past. My bee suit is in the wash - i was stung many times. Any thoughts and an explaination of how to position the clearer board would be helpful.
Thanks

However, on researching, I have found many negative results from its use.
In our area which treatment is most suitable, or less so.. Apistan, Apiguard, Maqs, or Oxalic acid.
Living near Pateley Bridge my bee are still working the heather and Himalayan B..
Wow, its a minefield out there, please advice.
Mike R. what do you use?

<![CDATA[Re queening]]> http://hrbka.org.uk/forums/thread/34/re-queening#dis-post-94 Last Saturday I noticed my queen had stopped laying for some reason. There was no eggs or larva just a bit of capped brood (Drone and worker) in a nice pattern. Fantastic honey flow on, am surrounded by rape but definitely not a single egg or even larva. argh!!!
I quickly ordered a Buckfast mated queen and it came today, amazing, just in the ordinary post, Paul our postie was dead interested.
Yesterday I removed the queen, I had left her there until I knew the new queen was on her way to prevent laying workers. Don't know if that was the right thing to do. I spend a lot of my time reading up any actions I do but there seems to be different views to every thing in beekeeping! So this afternoon, I pressed the cage in one of the frames that had some capped brood and wrapped it in newspaper and replaced it in the hive. (Read that tip in one of my books)I then closed up.
But.....I forgot to put some tape over the end of the fondant so I am now beating myself up for exposing the queen too early!!! The bees were dead grumpy and I totally forgot to do that one thing! I hope I get away with it.
I seem to lurch from one drama to another with this beekeeping lark but I love it. I try to do the right thing for the colony but am definitely on a steep learning curve.

<![CDATA[Buying mated queens]]> http://hrbka.org.uk/forums/thread/28/buying-mated-queens#dis-post-78
One of my colonies has reduced to dreadful temper since re-queening last summer. I intend replacing the queen in the spring if their behaviour does not improve after the winter.

I am probably going to use a "Buckfast" queen but am open to suggestions of other (cheaper) nice non-swarmy bees.

We are always being told to be very cautious in sourcing from abroad so I guess that UK ones are best. Has anyone bought UK sourced queens and any recommendations, or used a reliable source from overseas?

Hope someone out there can help.

Each session starts at 2pm and requires one beekeeper with a minimum of two years experience to lead the demonstration and another to assist. The assistant can be a complete beginner - even those who are currently taking the beginners' course are welcome and it can be a great way to learn from an experienced beekeeper.

The demonstrations are very popular with visitors to Fountains Abbey and the feedback has always been very positive.

Although May is still some time off, I need to start putting together a rota now so that I can be sure of filling all of the slots.

If you can spare some time to take part in these demonstrations, please contact me either by emailing me at the address on http://hrbka.org.uk/contact.html or by sending a private message with the following information:

  • What Sundays between 4th May and 31st August (inclusive) you are potentially available for. (Please list all to make it easier for me to accommodate everyone in the rota)
  • How many demonstrations you are prepared to take part in. (I promise not to put you down for more slots than this!)
  • Whether you are happy to be the lead demonstrator, the assistant, or either

Best regards
